Important Announcements Concerning Ingredients in Our Formulations
Preservatives
Paraben
Here at Return to Eden, we do not feel there is enough scientific evidence to prove that paraben present in cosmetic formulations is at a concentration sufficient to cause any type of estrogenic effect. Additionally, methylparaben and propylparaben are GRAS compounds (Generally Recognized as Safe and allowed in food products in the US), and parabens are allowed in cosmetics in the EU, US, and Japan. We deeply believe parabens are one of the safest preservatives available to the cosmetic industry. However, we are cognizant of the fear consumers hold for this product. As such, any of our formulas that contain parabens are clearly labeled on this site.
Potassium Sorbate
Potassium sorbate is a naturally occuring product originally found in the mountain laurel ash. It is found in many foods and in wine.
We use potassium sorbate (another GRAS compound) in a lot of our products to minimize the number of products containing paraben. However, in a small percentage of the population, potassium sorbate causes sensitization even in the low concentrations used for preserving cosmetics (although I have a client with rosacea who uses products containing potassium sorbate without irritation or sensitivity). As such, we are planning to implement a system in our webcart so that you can choose an alternative preservative system for every formula containing potassium sorbate. This system has not yet been implemented, but if you are allergic to potassium sorbate and want a product that contains it, please let us know. We can customize the formula to eliminate potassium sorbate (please know that elimination of potassium sorbate may require us to use a paraben to ensure broad-spectrum preservation--if this is required, we will let you know before you place your order).
Phenoxyethanol
Phenoxyethanol has a relatively long history of use in cosmetics, and when combined with potassium
sorbate offers broad spectrum control of bacteria and mold/yeast. Multiple safety/toxicity studies and biological control studies have been performed with phenoxyethanol.
Other Preservatives
Glyceryl Monocaprylate--An excellent preservative that also exhibits activity against the bacteria that causes acne (Propionibacterium acnes); our source of glyceryl monocaprylate is naturally derived
Levulinic Acid/Sodium Levulinate--Another GRAS preservative that is also naturally derived usually from sugar or cellulosic biomass (ours is from a corn source)
p-Anisic Acid/Sodium Anisate--Powerful anti-fungal agent also naturally derived (ours is sourced from basil).
These three preservatives are reported to provide broad preservative activity and all are naturally derived. Some of our formulas utilize one or more of these preservatives.
Micronized Titanium Dioxide/Micronized Minerals
Because there is so little information on the safety of micronized compounds in cosmetics,Return to Eden Cosmetics does not use any micronized minerals.
Face Cleansers--We are revamping our facial cleansers in an attempt to eliminate sulfates of all sorts. These new sulfate free cleansers aren't for sale yet (we're still re-formulating), but if you just have to have a cleanser right now, you can e-mail us about one of these.
Leave No Trace--COMING SOON--Make-up removing lotion formulated with aloe vera and almond oil. This light yet moisturizing lotion dissolves make-up allowing easy removal.
Gentle Goat Milk Cleanser ($14 for 4 oz)--Incredibly mild cleanser. We start out with natural goat's milk soap and add shea butter, avocado oil, vitamin E, aloe vera leaf juice, and hyaluronic acid to create an incredibly moisturizing cleanser designed to thoroughly wash away dirt and impurities without stripping the skin of moisture. This cleanser is designed for dry skin types.
Jojoba & Olive Gentle Goat Milk Cleanser ($14 for 4 oz)--A lighter version of the Gentle Goat Milk Cleanser designed for oily and combination skin types. Jojoba oil helps regulate skin sebum production. Olive leaf extract, panthenol (provitamin B-5), and hyaluronic acid have all been added to help nourish and prevent stripping the skin.
So, what the heck is a hydrosol? Essential oils are created through a distillation process resulting in pure essential OIL. Along the way, water is collected that has been steeped in the herb/flower (i.e. rose, lavender, calendula, etc.). This water is the distillate (or hydrosol) infused with some of the compounds from the herb/flower used. It is often nourishing and retains some of the fragrance compounds from the herb/flower used to create the essential oil. We actually create our own hydrosols (though we don't make our own essential oils...yet) using a "poor man's method" also known as a cold finger.
We do add
preservatives to our toners. We are having quite a bit of success with the incredibly mild (i.e. preservative used in contact lens solution)
polyaminopropyl biguanide in our toners and hydrosols and hope to be using this method exclusively for toner/hydrosol preservation in the future. Potassium sorbate is added to all toners to inhibit mold growth.

Soothing Cucumber & Calendula Toner (2 ounces for $9, 4 ounces for $14)--Incredibly mild toner with calendula and cucumber for soothing irritated and inflamed skin.

Mango, Papaya, Pineapple, & Banana Face Mask (1 ounce for $6, 2 ounces for $11)--This dry mask lets you mix up a little bit at the time. We recommend mixing one level teaspoon of dry mix with one teaspoon of water, champagne, milk, red wine, or one of our toners. This amount should be more than enough for a single application (and should be enough for a mask for yourself and two or three friends). One level teaspoon of mix should provide at least six applications.
A word about the ingredients:
Papaya, contains Vitamin A & Vitamin C and also the enzyme, papain, which helps to exfoliate the skin and reveal a brighter complexion.
Pineapple contains the enzyme bromelain which also aids in exfoliation.
Banana helps moisturize the skin, and mango is also high in Vitamins A & E.
Yogurt powder has lots of lactic acid, an alpha hydroxy acid, which further aids in skin exfoliation.
Coconut milk has antiseptic abilities to help aleviate acne.
Whole milk has been used for centuries (Cleopatra used to bathe in milk to maintain her youth and beauty) to nourish and revitalize the skin.

Face Creams--Our face creams and eye creams are sold in airless containers based on volume. Airless containers are used to prevent introduction of mold or bacteria into the product and also to help prevent oxidation of ingredients due to excessive exposure to air. The airless containers thereby help ensure the efficacy of your product from first use until you're scraping the bottom desperately awaiting for your next order of cream to arrive.
Our face creams are loaded with anti-oxidants. The purpose of anti-oxidants is to sacrifice themselves to oxidizing agents, such as reactive oxygen species (ROS), in order to prevent your skin cells from being damaged by oxidizing agents (see our blog post on anti-oxidants for more information). Because of this, anti-oxidants are prone to oxidation if exposed to air (oxygen) or light (UV rays). We package our face creams in airless containers for this reason and suggest a use by date of one year from purchase.
Some of our face creams are listed both in our normal to dry skin and oily/acne prone skin sections as we try to make our face creams suitable for a variety of skin types. While many of our daycreams contain anti-oxidants, anti-aging compounds, and UV protectors, we have no way of determining the SPF value of any of our creams. Therefore, we advise use of either make-up containing sunscreen or of an additional sun protectant during the daytime (and we strongly advise use of a non-micronized physical sunscreen rather than a chemical sunscreen to help you stay young looking for years longer).
The Golden Standard Line - Each of the creams in our Golden Standard Line contain Coenzyme Q-10, a bright orange powder that lends a yellow to gold color to each of these creams depending on the other ingredients in the formula (acai extract tends to make the cream more tan in color than the antioxidant complex).
Night Creams
Jar of Youth Night Cream ($25 for 1 fluid ounce) - Part of the Golden Standard Line - Packed with collagen boosting Palmitoyl Tripeptide-5, moisture retaining Hyaluronic Acid (in the form of sodium hyaluronate), and the energy boosting and anti-oxidant Coenzyme Q-10 (Ubiquinone). Palmitoyl Tripeptide-5 deeply penetrates skin and stimulates collagen synthesis. It also repairs stretch marks. Coenzyme Q-10 also aids in collagen synthesis by contributing to cellular respiration in addition to providing anti-oxidant protection. Hyaluronic acid is an incredible moisturizer. Highly recommended for wrinkle treatment and/or stretch mark repair. Use this product for eight weeks and you'll see a dramatic difference (pictures of results from this cream will be posted in the next few months).
Hyaluronic acid and Coenzyme Q-10 are both produced naturally by the body and are normally found in the skin. However, as we age, we produce less of both of these compounds.
Return to Eden Cosmetics is introducing Vitamin A into this night cream because of its remarkable skin health benefits.
Vitamin A is left out of the majority of our day creams (and is limited in concentration in the rest) because it is easily degraded by exposure to UV light and can cause increased photosensitivity (sunburn) if worn at high concentrations during the day. Present normally in the skin, Vitamin A is regarded as the single best ingredient for maintaining a youthful complexion as it helps regulate collagen synthesis, even skin tone, and normalize skin cell turn over. Applying a skin cream containing Vitamin A at night helps replenish the levels of Vitamin A in our skin and results in a more radiant complexion.

Pomegranate & Jojoba Night Cream with Vitamin A ($25 for 1 fluid ounce) - Part of the Golden Standard Line - Lightweight
day cream with jojoba and hemp seed oil. Hemp seed oil contains high
levels of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) which provide
anti-oxidant protection. Coenzyme Q-10 & Vitamins A, C, & E are in this product as well as in the day cream, which complements this product.
The Vitamin A concentration in the night cream is relatively high. Though retinyl
palmitate, a relatively mild form of Vitamin A, is used in this
formulation as opposed to trans-retinoic acid, it is recommended that
you ease into use of this cream as Vitamin A can cause redness and
irritation initially until your skin becomes more used to it (Vitamin A
increases cell turn over). If you are not currently using a face cream
containing Vitamin A, use this cream every other night for one week
before beginning to use this cream on a nightly basis to avoid any
redness or irritation.

We take each one of our fantastic night-time formulas and boost the anti-oxidant level to help protect your skin from the damaging effects of the sun. You should still use a sunscreen along with each one of our day creams as the SPF level has not been quantified.
Jar of Youth Day Cream ($20 for 1 fluid ounce) - Part of the Golden Standard Line - Similar to the night cream, but enriched with anti-oxidants--acai palm extract, green tea extract, and pomegranate oil/extract. We added these ingredients to help provide anti-oxidant protection keeping skin looking young and healthy.

Oats & Pomegranate Night Cream with Vitamin A ($25 for 1 fluid ounce) - Part of our Golden Standard Line - Lightweight night
cream with just a touch of pomegranate oil to stabilize the emulsion and provide the benefits of pomegranate oil (i.e. high levels of the anti-oxidant polyphenols and polyunsaturated fatty acids). Vitamin A regulates skin cell renewal while Vitamins C & E along with Green Tea Extract and White Tea Extract provide anti-oxidant protection. Oat Beta Glucan helps moisturize the skin without the addition of extra oils. Cucumber and calendula extracts soothe inflamed skin.

day cream with a touch of pomegranate oil. Complements our Oats & Pomegranate Night Cream with Vitamin A. The difference between the day cream and the night cream is that the day cream is even lighter, it contains more anti-oxidants (higher levels of green and white tea extracts, rooibos, and ginkgo biloba), and NO Vitamin A (Vitamin A is readily oxidized by UV light, so it is better to use a more concentrated Vitamin A cream at night rather than in the day time).

Soothing Cucumber & Calendula Eye Cream ($15 for 0.5 fluid ounce) - Part of our Golden Standard Line - Cucumber extract relieves undereye puffiness as calendula soothes the delicate skin beneath the eyes. Palmitoyl Tripeptide-5 increases collagen synthesis. Sesame oil, with the natural anti-oxidant sesamol, rice bran oil, with high phytosterol content and high levels of gamma-oryzanol, which is purported to stimulate blood flow, and evening primrose oil, which absorbs readily into the skin. Hydrolyzed oats (also known as oat protein) helps retain moisture. This eye cream also contains rutin (as do all of our face creams), which strengthens capillaries (thereby potentially helping to reduce the appearance of underye circles).
Sesame oil is a fairly occlusive oil, meaning it takes longer than some other oils to absorb into the skin. For that reason, if you are prone to acne, please be sure to keep this cream in the eye area. We use sesame oil because of its natural anti-oxidant properties.

Good Rubbin' Fragranced Massage Oil (4 ounces for $10, 8 ounces for $15.75)--This all-natural massage oil contains apricot kernel oil, sunflower oil, grapeseed oil, and rice bran oil. Vitamin E acts as a natural preservative for oils providing them a longer shelf life without going rancid. You choose your fragrances.

Deliciously Naughty Flavored Massage Oil (2 ounces for $7.50, 4 ounces for $12.50)--This all-natural massage oil contains apricot kernel oil, rice bran oil, grapeseed oil, safflower oil, and avocado oil. Vitamin E acts as a natural anti-oxidant. Rice bran oil contains gamma oryzanol purported to stimulate blood flow to further spice things up... Just a touch of stevia (natural sweetener) and glycerin (of vegetable origin) add to the taste of this oil. You choose your flavor.

Blue Spruce*-Crisp clean scent, perfect for men, and a refreshing scent for winter. Blends well with lots of other scents, try with other evergreens or dare to try with any other men's fragrances.
Drakkar-Okay, so we do not keep up with the most up-to-date men's colognes on the market, but we hear Drakkar Noir by Guy Laroche is pretty popular. This fragrance mimics Drakkar Noir with its spicy blend of lavender, citrus, sandalwood, and amber. Beautiful alone, but blends well with almost everything. Try it with Tea or Samurai Warrior or Spirit of Sedona.
Glacier*-Amber and Mulberry form the base of this fragrance as Water Lily, Honeydew, Citrus, Black Currant, and Pineapple add substance and texture to this fragrance. It's absolutely divine and refreshing. Fantastic alone, muted in other fragrances. This is another fragrance that pairs well with absolutely everything, especially evergreen fragrances and Rain.
Mahogany-A rich fragrance which whispers strength. Oakmoss, Cedar, and Apple Wood form the base of this fragrance which is lightened with Cardamom, Bergamot, and Vanilla Bourbon. While great by itself, this fragrance blends well with Spirit of Sedona and Silent Forest.

Samurai Warrior-Rooted in woody base notes, this blend is topped with citrus and tropical fruit blends and florals. Well grounded yet balanced, just as a Samurai Warrior should be, this fragrance whispers strength. This fragrance blends well with Tea and Spirit of Sedona.
Silent Forest-Think of moonlight in an evergreen forest after a fresh snowfall. This scent captures that feeling and that smell. A clean, crisp scent, this fragrance is perfect by itself, but it blends well with almost everything. For a few ideas, try blending it with Blue Spruce, Wise Sage, or Mahogany.
Spirit of Sedona-There is something deep and mysterious about Sedona, Arizona. This fragrance captures that mystery and richness. With its notes of Bulgarian Rose, Sandalwood, Amber, and Bourbon Vanilla, this complex blend layers soft sensual notes atop masculine undertones forming an incredible robust fragrance. Spirit of Sedona is beautiful by itself but also blends well with Tea, Mahogany, and Samurai Warrior.
Tea-A rich blend of Tobacco and Tea leaves, this fragrance is enhanced with Bergamot, Lemon, and Orange, Cedarwood and Musk further establish the base of this fragrance. Very unique and masculine, perfect alone or paired with Samurai Warrior or Spirit of Sedona. For the more experimental, try pairing with Wasabi.
Wasabi-A unique fragrance sure to be an eye-opener. Refreshing blend of Eucalyptus, Ginger, and Peppermint, this fragrance is toned down with notes of Amber and Musk. Wasabi works well by itself but feel free to experiment.
Wise Sage*-A robust blend of Sage, Evergreen, and Juniper. This fragrance is rounded with Bergamot, Amber, and Geranium. Blend with any of the evergreens or try mixing with anything. Try this with Apple Cider for fun, make an energetic blend by adding citrus essential oils, or just try pairing with another men's fragrance.
For the Girls (okay, some are for guys too)
Apple Cider*-Fantastic unisex blend, and just in time for fall! Apple, cinnamon, and cloves add spice and kick to this blend. Equally suitable for girls and guys.
Arabian Mocha*-A heavenly scent. Cocoa, nutmeg, cardamom, and milk round out this espresso fragrance. Simply exquisite.
Cranberry Tart-A crisp, tart cranberry scent, yet somehow still sweet.
Dirty English*(pf)-A mimic blend of Juicy Couture's Dirty English. A blend of citrus, cedar, and leather with musky undertones and a hint of vanilla. We feel it's just as suitable for women as men.
Ginger Essence*(pf)-A combination of ginger and citrus along with berry and a base of amber.
Orange Mocha*-Remember Starbucks' Valencia Frappuccino? Okay, not to make you want one even more, but now you can at least smell it again. This fragrance mimics the scent perfectly. For a little more spice, it is excellent paired with Orange Spice. A little more citrus--pair with any of the citrus essential oils.
Orange Spice*-Citrus and spice. This blend is warm and spicy without being overpoweringly citrusy.
Strawberries n' Champagne* (pf)-Divine. The champagne fragrance breaks through more than the strawberries, but divine nonetheless. Can be used for men or women and smells like a spumante.
Wine*-Think of a warm, fruity, red wine sure to warm you up after a cold winter's day.
Winter Spice-Orange and lemon paired with all your favorite holiday spices, this fragrance is warm and spicy.

Our whipped body butters contain no water and therefore do not need any preservatives. These body butters are thick, a little goes a long way, and they are all more suitable for body hydration than for hands. They soak in best when applied to dry skin--seal in moisture by applying right after toweling off when you step out of the shower! Bath fizzies and herbal bath teas both have their appeal. But, we think we have found a better way. Fizzies are rarely nourishing enough to be worth their cost. The milk powder in herbal bath teas almost never fully dissolves, and usually there just aren't enough herbs to overcome the milk smell. We've devised a solution for both. Our bath powder still fizzes like a bath bomb, but contains much more milk powder and hydrating oil per ounce than a bath fizzy. Just toss a rounded scoop of this powder into your bath. We offer a large selection of powder types. With every bath powder purchase, we also include a selection of herbal bath teas, each filled with only herbs. You can toss one of these into your bath along with a scoop of powder for a nourishing and relaxing aromatherapeutic session.

Transport yourself to calm, or revitalization, or luxury, your choice. Each of our herbal bath tea bags is filled with only herbs. Toss one into your bath water and allow the soothing aromas ease you into bliss. These can also be used as drawer sachets.
At a recent craft fair, a lady came to me asking what product I would recommend for her daughter who had eczema. She wanted something that would last a long time and that would actually help. The conversation wrung my heart and inspired me to adapt some of our products. Return to Eden Cosmetics makes no claims that any of these will work for helping with eczema or any other skin condition, but these products represent our best attempt to provide relief for those of you suffering from dry skin and/or eczema. If you are willing to try new products to help with your skin condition or the skin condition of a loved one, here are some things to try. For the time being, we are offering these only in smaller sizes so that people are able to sample a wide range of products if they choose without a lot of cost. Gentle Body Bar (help us name it, $ varies by size, see our Soaps & Lotion Bars Page for more information)--This lotion bar is very similar to our normal Body Bar with a few exceptions. It contains less beeswax, so it isn't quite as hard as our regular Body Bar. We've added Grapeseed Oil and Rice Bran Oil, which is high in Vitamin E, reputed to be beneficial for eczema treatment, to the mixture in this one. In addition, we've stepped up the amount of cocoa butter and Vitamin E eliminating the shea butter. For this bar, we only offer limited fragrances (select essential oils) in order to exclude the possibility of synthetic fragrances aggravating the skin.
This bar is designed for those with eczema and to aid in healing of scar tissue. However, we make no claims that it will work for either one. Do not use on open wounds or sores. Please see our section under FAQs for more information regarding eczema and wound healing.

Herbs
You'll find the following herbs in our Tea Time! Bath Teas or as herbal hydrosols in our other products.
Calendula is extremely soothing and is used topically to treat
acne and control inflammation. It is also used in tinctures to speed
wound healing. Calendula is gentle enough to use in products for babies
and children. We make this infusion by steeping calendula petals in
jojoba oil.
Chamomile, like calendula, is extremely soothing and also
incredibly gentle. Soothes tired achy muscles, softens the skin, and
instills relaxation. After a long hard day, nothing will help you
de-stress quite as much as a chamomile tea bath.
NOTE: If you are allergic to ragweed, chamomile is not a good choice for you. Please let us know you'd prefer not to have chamomile in your products at the time of purchase.
Lavender is known for its calming effect. Lavender offers
anti-septic and anti-inflammatory properties providing relief of acne,
insect bites, and sunburns. Lavender oil contains compounds which
provide antioxidant protection and also helps tone skin. In spite of
all its benefits, lavender should be used with caution if you are
pregnant or breastfeeding.
Nothing makes you feel quite as extravagant as the smell of rose petals.
The scent of rose petals elicit calm, but did you know rose water is
considered anti-bacterial and antiseptic? And, rose evens blotchy skin
tone, soothes inflamed tissue, and hydrates delicate skin. So, sit

What benefits
does milk powder provide? Milk is loaded with hydroxy acids providing
gentle exfoliation as you bathe. It also contains a hefty amount of
protein making it excellent for use on your body and hair. It softens
and smoothes skin and instills moisture as you bathe.
Honey is a natural humectant and is also anti-microbial. We
recommend a combination of honey and milk in our bath teas for a doubly
delightful bath.
Yogurt
contains even more hydroxy acids than milk and is widely tauted for use
in facial masks. Just as the milk powder, yogurt powder helps restore
your natural glow.
Types of Powders we offer: Whole Milk-Contains 28.5% milk fat. Basic, but fantastic.
Goat's Milk-Pasteurized
spray dried goat's milk with 29.7% milk fat and 27% protein. Is it
better than whole milk in our bath teas? You be the judge.
Coconut Milk-A
fun alternative to regular milk, coconut milk has anti-fungal,
anti-bacterial, and anti-viral properties when taken internally.
Coconut milk powder still offers smoother more vibrant skin as you exit
the tub.
Yogurt-This may just be the best powder for revitalizing tired, dry skin.
Honey-Delightful in products for babies and children, honey is soothing, anti-microbial, and helps heal minor scrapes and scars.
